The successful candidate will study and implement robust methods for semantic / pragmatic analysis, focusing on the detection and disambiguation of cohesion markers in English and French. The results will be used as input for statistical machine translation software developed by the other partners of COMTIS, at the University of Geneva. Candidates should have a solid background in computer science, and good knowledge of the natural language processing field, in particular of statistical methods based on machine learning. They should have excellent programming skills as well as good communication skills in English and French. A strong academic record and a clear aptitude for creative research will be priority selection criteria. Funding is guaranteed for 3 years through a Swiss National Science Foundation PhD studentship, with a possible extension for a fourth year.
