summaryThe 2017 UNESCO report “Cracking the code” comments key indicators which show that “the world is still deprived of the talents and potential contributions of millions of women due to clear gender-based discrepancies in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) education and occupations”. I propose we take a short overlook of the situation in different countries and discuss what can turn young girls and women away from science. We will focus on the causes and consequences of the lack of role-models for young women in science, from a biaised science history which cancels the contributions of women to a conception of science made by men and only men. We will discuss in which conditions a woman in science can be a role-model for younger women and how to support women who made the choice of science. This way, we can identify some actions to take to attract, keep, and promote women in Science. Everybody can play a role to reach that goal, from school to research lab.
