| summary | It has become a habit in the scientific community to note (and sometimes complain about) the exponential growth of science. In this seminar I will present a study aimed to analyze the impacts of scientific production growth on citation practices and on the diffusion of scientific literature. In this study we analyze several bibliometrics datasets concerning different scientific fields of study and we also propose a simple innovation model showcasing the impacts of the production rate on citation concentration and age. Our results show that scientific publications, due to their specific nature, face different challenges compared to other cultural products. Although the prevalent effects of platformization and overproduction are generally understood in terms of diminished attention and the fleeting prominence, science is mostly challenged by an overemphasis on established works and a resultant stagnation in the evolution of its canons. Inspired by what observed in the data, the model shows that even if the basic rules of cumulative advantage are not drastically changed in time, meaning that the reputation formation mechanisms of researchers are driven by the same dynamics, the effect of the exponential growth, gradually drive to the concentration and the aging of scientific elites. |
