summaryWork on simplification has long focused on sentences. In this talk, I will propose an approach for simplifying documents which is based on two key ideas: Planning helps and context matters. Thus we propose a two step simplification model which starts by planning the sequence of simplification operations that will be applied to the document sentences. For context, we argue that both local and global context must be modeled as different simplification operations require knowledge of different types of context. We will explore various models which exploit document context for planning and/or simplification, either by iterating over larger text units or by extending the system architecture to attend over a high-level representation of document context. If time allows, I will further discuss some issues which arise with evaluation and present a new metric we develop to assess simplicity. (Joint work with Liam Cripwell)
