| summary | This talk brings together several computational ideas about working memory. Working memory is conceptualized as a limited-capacity information channel that is designed to minimize distortion. The optimal channel design can be implemented in a simple and biologically plausible neural network that resembles previously proposed population coding models. The model can account for a wide variety of empirical phenomena that have eluded a unifying explanation, and also makes some new predictions which we test. |
