summaryBy the age of 6 or 7, children become aware of phonemes within words, but before this time, they have no ability to divide words into their constituent sounds. Furthermore, the age at which children can do this varies across languages. Why is there this development, and why is it language-dependent? I present a rational analysis approach to these questions, indicating that the child learns each level of representation of language when it is useful and efficient to store and process at this level.
