| summary | Social insects like ants build trail systems that are very similar to human transportation networks. Responsible for the formation of these trail systems is a special form of (chemical) communication between the ants, namely chemotaxis. In this talk we will discuss a model for the simulation of pedestrian dynamics that is inspired by the behaviour of ants in ant trails. The interactions between pedestrians as well as those with the infrastructure are implemented by a kind of virtual chemotaxis. This allows the model to be rather simple but at the same time it is able to reproduce the collective effects observed empirically, e.g. the formation of lanes in counterflow or surprising results from aircraft evacuation experiments. |
