| summary | A popular theory by Paula Tallal attributes language and literacy disorders to a low-level impairment in auditory temporal processing. Our group has examined this theory using data from genetic, behavioural, electrophysiological and intervention studies. The results suggest that auditory deficits may act as a risk factor for language impairments, but cannot be regarded as the cause. Deficiencies of verbal short-term memory, which appear to have a different etiology from auditory deficits, also play an important role. |
