| summary | The observation that a single tone contains in itself other tones is due to M. Mersenne. This psychophysical phenomenon has had far reaching consequences in musical theory, in mathematical physics and in Epistemology. It was the basis of the theory of harmony of J.P. Rameau, it inspired D'Alembert, Daniel Bernoulli and Euler in their mathematical treatment of the vibrating string and it was decisive in the development of Helmoltz's concept of perception and apperception. Modern methods of brain imaging (MRI and MEG) allow to investigate the neurophysiological basis of this phenomenon. |
