| summary | In this talk I look at some general steps in the process of assigning a preliminary meaning to an unfamiliar word, from the establishment of joint attention to evidence for uptake by children. I also look at parental routines for introducing new words over different parts of speech, and at how adults "license" inferences about meanings through the added information they offer about the referents of unfamiliar words. |
