| summary | Reading visually presented words enables rapid, complex and silent communication. The neuronal system activated by reading connects brain regions involved in object recognition, auditory speech comprehension, and speech production but reading is more than the sum of its parts. As predicted by neuropsychological studies, more than one neuronal pathway is available for linking orthographic input to phonological output.
These neuronal pathways can be segregated within individuals on the basis of responses to different word types or between individuals for the same word type. In my talk, I will discuss the neuronal pathways for reading and the implications for cognitive models of reading in
neurologically normal and brain damaged subjects. |
