summarySubjects learn to speak before they learn to write. This has led to assume that writing is ancillary to speaking, and that in writing the normal subject must access phonological information about the to-be-written word.  I will review evidence from neurological cases, showing that this is not true, and that orthographic and phonological lexical forms are both accessed directly and independently from conceptual information.  Evidence from brain-damaged subjects also suggests that orthographic and phonological word forms interact via sublexical grapheme-phoneme (and phoneme-grapheme) conversion procedures.  Possible forms of such an interaction will be discussed.
