summaryWhen there are conflicting results from clinical trials in medicine and clinical psychology, what are the rules for combining the evidence and drawing a causal inference? Traditional qualitative reviews of clinical evidence typically use no agreed upon rules, but rely instead on the intuitions of an expert reviewer. In the newer quantitative reviews, the rule of meta-analysis is used, but its use is controversial when the conflicting studies are of uneven epistemic quality. I discuss the desirability and feasibility of developing a system of epistemic quality points that can be used for grading studies, one that can be employed in either a qualitative or quantitative review.
