summaryThere was a time in the nineteenth century when logic and probability were studied by the same people, such as Boole, Jevons, Venn. Qualitative concepts were used for deductive, probabilistic ones for uncertain inference. By the beginning of the twentieth century, logicians were focussing exclusively on deductive matters, leaving probability to the probabilists. Even in the first years of this century with the development of so-called nonmonotonic logic, the two cultures remain far apart. Nevertheless, it seems evident that qualitative and quantitative approaches each have their part to play in the analysis of uncertain reasoning. Their differences and connections deserve further clarification, and there are some major open problems still be answered. In this talk, which is based on joint work with James Hawthorne, we will discuss these issues, taking as a basis the notion of a consequence relation as it manifests itself in the different contexts.
