| summary | Most of the studies concerning olfaction and the other different senses have adopted direct measures of performance where people were directly asked about the existence of associations between odours and stimuli of a different sensory nature (e.g., Kemp & Gilbert, 1997; Shifferstein & Tanudjaja, 2004). In addition, these investigations have mainly focused on the relations between olfaction and vision (e.g., Österbauer et al., 2005), thus neglecting the links between odours and other senses, such as for instance touch. In my talk, I will present a series of experiments aimed at filling this gap. In the first group of experiments, I will present some data demonstrating that the associations between odours and colours described previously can be also highlighted indirectly by using a modified version of the Implicit Association Test (IAT; Greenwald et al., 1998). Then, I will present data supporting the claim that such crossmodal associations do also exist between odours and tactile perception of fabric softness. The results will support the existence of stable associations between odours and colours and between odours and tactile sensations which might be explained in the light of the fundamental role played by associative learning in olfactory and taste perception.
