summaryVirtual characters as a means to interface with human users have become a research area in its own right. This talk touches two areas in the field. The first is the analysis of empirical data (usually video) of human behavior to guide the design of virtual characters. The ANVIL video annotation tool will be outlined as a research tool, its possibilities, limitations and future extensions will be discussed. The second part of the talk will introduce a running virtual characters system, COHIBIT, an interactive, edutaining museum exhibit which shows how high-level behavior of virtual characters can be controlled in a complex application with multimodal human-computer interaction in realtime.
