summaryIn linguistic semantics simplex quantifiers (like "some", "many"), but also complex ones (like "at least four") are all thought to correspond to relations between sets. These relations generally involve some specific quantity (for instance, a non-zero cardinality for "some", a contextually determined large quantity for "many", a cardinality of four or more for "at least four" etc.) This approach is in contrast to results brought forward by cognitive psychological studies of quantifier processing, where the concensus seems to be that there is very little specific content in quantifiers and that quantifier meaning is mostly derived contextually. In this talk, I will discuss some well-known contextual effects in quantifier comprehension and scrutinise the linguistic/semantic relevance of them.
