summaryA series of studies will be described in which fMRI or ERPs were used to further characterize the neural correlates of successful episodic encoding and retrieval. The findings converge to suggest that the content of recollection depends on i) how attention is allocated during encoding, and ii) the specific pattern of cortical activity engendered at retrieval. In addition, there is increasing evidence indicating a role for lateral parietal cortex in the representation of recollected information, independent of the specific content.
