summaryResearch on non-human animals, on human infants, on children and adults in diverse cultures, and on children and adults with selective neurological impairments provides evidence for two systems at the foundations of formal mathematics. One is a system for representing small sets of individuals with exact precision ; the other is a system for representing large cardinal values with a ratio limit on precision. I will review research probing the existence and properties of these systems and then discuss new research that asks how children build on these systems as they learn verbal counting and symbolic arithmetic.
