| summary | A core feature of Goldberg’s (1995, 2006) construction grammar is the strict separation of verbs from argument structures, which allows us to approach the relationship between the two from a novel perspective. In my talk, I will present a family of collocation-based methods for investigating various aspects of the lexis/syntax interface (Stefanowitsch and Gries 2003, Gries and Stefanowitsch 2004a, b). After discussing some advanced corpus-based applications of these methods (Stefanowitsch and Gries 2005, submitted), I will discuss some recent work by myself and colleagues concerning psycholinguistic consequences of this perspective, such as (i) some aspects of the linguistic representation of verbs and constructions that may be affected by collostructional relationships (Hilpert, submitted), (ii) the question whether collostructional relationships are better captured by frequency or by association strength (Wiechmann, submitted), and (iii) whether negative associations between verbs and constructions play a role in determining the acceptability of non-occurring verb-construction combinations (Stefanowitsch 2006, submitted). |
