summary | Synaptic plasticity probably underlies memory storage. Therefore the stability and plasticity of memories will be a function of the synaptic learning rules. Using computational models, we approach this question on the level of the single synapse and simple networks. We first analyze in the context of STDP learning, how the precise learning rule affects the memory retention of the single synapses and receptive fields. In the second part of the talk, we address recent work from Fusi and Abbott (2007) that suggest that discrete synapses have a limited information capacity. We employ an information theoretic analysis to refine these results. |
