| summary | I will sketch the argument presented at length in The Harmonic Mind (Smolensky & Legendre 2006) that the connectionist and symbolic computational architectures can be unified with the result of strengthening both. The cognitive domain is grammar, with an emphasis on phonology; the talk will include an introduction to a recent theory of universal grammar, Optimality Theory (Prince & Smolensky 1993/2004), and its relation to connectionism, through the intermediate framework of Harmonic Grammar (Legendre, Miyata & Smolensky 1990; see also Pater, Potts & Bhatt 2006). |
