| summary | I will describe how the mathematical idea of diffusion appears under different guises in several fields: heat diffusion, fluid dynamics, probability and image processing. Depending on the context one is led to linear, non-linear as well as non local forms. In this survey lecture, I will briefly describe several of the analytical issues that guide our understanding of these equations. |
