summaryThis talk describes experiments that make a quantitative connection between ToBI-like intonation phonology and acoustic properties. We build classifiers that attempt to predict the human-assigned phonological category on the basis of acoustic properties. By measuring their success rate, we can estimate whether or not we are capturing the right information; by analysing the classifier, we can find which properties contribute most to the human assignment of a category label.
