| summary | Acoustic differences in male versus female /s/ realisation have frequently been observed. Older studies explain these differences by means of biological factors between males and females, in particular with respect to the size of the vocal tract which can in turn affect the size of the front cavity and its resonances. More recent studies attribute it to an active process where females produce /s/ with another articulatory strategy than males as an index of their gender (social function of speech). However, articulatory and anatomical evidence is still missing. We were able to gather articulatory, acoustic, and anatomical data from 12 English and 12 German speakers with 6 males and 6 females for each language. Results will be presented soon. |
