summaryThree research efforts are introduced aiming at computational modeling of human's capabilities in spoken language processing. They are (1) temporal characteristics analyses on speech generation and perception, (2) statistical language modeling to enable speech recognition of unregistered expressions and (3) prosody modeling for communicative speech generation. Through the introduction of these studies, the importance of scientifically motivated quantitative modeling in traditional linguistics and phonetics is shown. The need of a transdisciplinary academic field computing phonetics to support traditional phonetics is discussed to study human language and speech capabilities from transdisciplinary global viewpoints.
