summaryThis seminar discusses the basic structures of sign language poetry. The focus will be both on formal and thematic aspects of poetic signing. Formally, Deaf poets utilise both temporal-sequential and visual-simultaneous poetic devices, such as rhythm, repetition, symmetry, manipulation of parameters (handshape, location and movement), eyegaze, blending, neologism and so forth. Such formal features are often symbolically associated with the themes of sign language poetry, which are deeply related to the identity of Deaf poets. The discussions will be based on the analyses of actual poems. Une interprète assurera la traduction de l'anglais en Langue des Signes Française.
