summaryMicrosaccades are a distinct component of the small eye movements that constitute fixation. They contribute to fundamental visual and motoric processes, including the control of fixation position and the prevention of visual fading. However, their implementation in the oculomotor system remains unknown. I will introduce a conceptual model in which microsaccades are the result of fixation-related activity in a motor map coding for both fixation and saccades. This model provides an appropriate framework for understanding the dynamics of microsaccade behavior in a variety of tasks.
