summaryGrowing evidence is showing that a large percentage of motor and premotor neurons are indeed sensorimotor. Among them, visuomotor neurons of ventral premotor area F5, are subdivided in two categories. Canonical neurons, responding at the observation of a graspable objects and when one acts on a similar object, and mirror neurons, sharing with canonical their motor properties but discharging when one observes another individual performing hand and mouth actions. In the first part of my presentation I will discuss how this association between stimulus and response, manifesting itself at single neuron level, might provide the goal to the movements. Thus, movements are transformed into actions and, perhaps more interestingly, may give origin to action representations, playing a crucial role in understanding other individuals and the environment around us. In the second part of my presentation, I will discuss the possible link between action representation, action understanding and interindividual communication, in the peculiar framework of human language.
