summary10 years ago Botvinick and Cohen published the first study in which an illusion of ownership of a fake hand was induced just by stroking it synchronously with one’s own real unseen hand. From then on more than 40 papers have been published that use this illusion with the aim to understand what are its bases : is it really a modification of my body schema up to the inclusion of the rubber hand? Is it simply a conditioning that links two co-occurring events? Or is it a visual capture of the tactile sensations due to the overriding of vision over touch when inputs coming from the two modalities are in contrast? Moreover: which are the boundaries for the induction of the illusion? Which are the areas of the brain responsible for the RHI? What do they reveal us about the nature of the illusion? And my own question is: what is left to understand about it? 10 years later this talk will try to shed a light on this curious phenomenon that probably reveals some interesting aspects of our body representation.
