summary | Empirical evidence suggest that visual completion is mediated by active processes leading to the generation of missing parts. Such an activity can be modelled as either interpolation or approximation. Interpolation models cannot account for completion phenomena involving distortions of image fragments. These distortions occur in limiting cases of completion and are compatible with the idea that shapes based on fragmentary evidence are the result of approximation. Recent data and theoretical implications will be discussed. |
