summaryThis lecture introduces the ethnographic context of linguistic and cultural change in Bosavi. In particular, it presents analyses of new ways of talking about bodily and affective demeanors, all of which contributed to the creation of key Christian concepts of personhood, interiority, and sincerity. Central to Bible reading and Christian conversion, these new expressive resources were introduced by local pastors through Tok Pisin (the national lingua franca), which they translated back into the Bosavi vernacular during church services. These innovations laid the foundations for a new Christian speech register, one way of enacting and embodying a Christian identity.
