| summary | Recently in HCI research, there has been much interest in "the user experience", and many new theories and methods have been developed. Much of this effort has focussed either on either web-based systems or on the design of interactive products for the home. In this talk however, I want to argue that an analysis of user experience can offer a valuable complementary perspective on more traditional areas such as safety-critical interaction. I will begin by describing our approach to user experience and point out how this differs from the more familiar perspectives of task analysis and information processing. I will then illustrate the approach through case studies of procedure following including an analysis of one pilot's experiences with emergency operating procedures. I will then conclude by exploring the wider implications of an experiential perspective on human-centred design. |
