summaryDesigning haptic signals to enrich technology interactions requires a clear understanding of the task, the user and the intricate affordances of touch.  This is especially true when the haptics do not literally mimic real world forces and textures, but are designed as new interactions that will convey meaning in new physical ways and support communication - between people, and with machines. The overall goal of my group's research is to provide the foundations for haptic interactions that are simple, usable and intuitive and that fit within the context of the user's life. Through a set of examples of projects and studies done by my group, I will develop the concepts of perceptual design, ubiquituous haptics and haptic human-computer interaction. Application areas include attention-conserving signaling and monitoring, mobile information sharing, expressive communication, and shared control, with an emphasis on the importance of process and appropriate tools and representations.
