| summary | Split fovea theory (SFT) proposes that when the eyes are fixated within a word, visual information about the letters falling to the left of fixation is projected first to the right cerebral hemisphere while visual information about letters falling to the right of fixation is projected first to the left cerebral hemisphere. The two parts of the word must then be re-united before the word can be recognised. If true, SFT has implications for cognitive and computational models of visual word recognition. In this talk I review the evidence in favour of SFT and its implications for visual word processing. |
