summaryRecent studies within neuroscience and cognitive psychology have elicited strong claims that the commonsensical view that we control many of our actions through conscious volition is largely or wholly illusory.  I will summarize some of the most significant empirical findings before arguing that the data do not strongly support revisionary conclusions. They do, however, point to the need to modify traditional philosophical accounts of the will in order to better accommodate the idea that freedom of the will and human responsibility come in degrees. I will briefly sketch some degreed dimensions along which freedom and responsibility vary, a number of which are connected to self-awareness in action.
