summaryThe capacity for generalization is one of the hallmarks of motor learning. However in this talk I will present data that indicate that generalization is far less general than one might expect. I will describe the results of studies of both human arm movement and also speech motor control that show that motor learning is essentially local or instance-based. That is, learning generalizes to a very limited extent and only to movements in nearby directions. To the extent that there is true generalization at all in motor learning, it seems to be based on interpolation based between instances of local learning. Surprisingly, there is little evidence of the most sophisticated form generalization, generalization of motor learning based on extrapolation-estimation of values outside the range of known values.
