summaryAlthough it is widely agreed that dyslexic children suffer from a phonological deficit, the nature of this deficit remains debated, with most hypotheses postulating some form of degradation of dyslexics' phonological representations. In order to shed light on this debate, we present data from experiments tapping novel aspects of phonology, in particular phonological grammar and representations. Contrary to most hypotheses, our work on French dyslexic adults suggests that their phonological representations are normal. New data on British children provide further confirmation. We then discuss the possible nature of the phonological deficit, if not a matter of degraded phonological representations.
