summaryAutism is a neurodevelopmental disorder characterised by difficulties in social and communicative domains. However, a striking feature of the disorder is that many individuals possess unusually good abilities within the domains of music and art. My talk will provide an overview of the experimental literature on music and autism and research findings will be discussed within the context of the disabilities associated with this disorder. Dr Pamela Heaton is a Reader in Neurodevelopmental disorders in the Psychology Department at Goldsmiths College. Her primary interest is in perception and cognition in Autism Spectrum Disorders and her doctoral work into musical cognition in autism was awarded the British Psychological Society prize for Outstanding Doctoral Research contributions to Psychology in 2004. Her most recent work has investigated absolute pitch across music and language domains and perception of prosody in autism.
