| summary | During evolution, the mammalian cerebral cortex has expanded disproportionately to brain volume. As a consequence, most mammals with large brains have profusely convoluted cortices. What does this mean for the organisation of the brain? I will present a computational model of cortical development, and use it as a theoretical framework to study the variability of the human brain in a cohort of more than 300 individuals. The results I will present suggest that the mechanisms driving brain evolution may be also at play among humans. |
