summaryIdentifying mechanisms underlying the acquisition of linguistic structure has been one of the central goals of language acquisition theory. This talk will focus on two mechanisms, rule learning (Marcus et al. 1999) and perceptual primitives (Endress et al. 2005, 2007), reporting a series of studies that investigate the developmental trajectory of the two mechanisms from birth to about 7 months of age. The results suggest that both mechanisms might be present during the first year of life, specifically contributing to the acquisition of different structural patterns.
