summaryStatistical inference, a major application of inductive inference in science, typically starts off with a statistical hypothesis, or a set of hypotheses collected in a statistical model. On the one hand, such hypotheses are statements about the data, which can presumably be true or false. On the other hand, they are expressed in probability functions over sample space, so they cannot be refuted by the data. So it seems that the empirical content of statistical hypotheses is unclear. This paper is an attempt to clarify what statistical hypotheses are, and to pin down their empirical content.
