summaryPrevious work has shown that if we observe another person operating a physical device, the action rule of the observed action is automatically activated and can subsequently facilitate own actions. We investigated the mechanisms responsible for this automatic priming of actions. In particular, we addressed the question whether participants focus on the behaviour of the physical device when observing another person interacting with it, or whether they also consider aspects of the person?s behaviour. The results of several experiments show that priming effects are not influenced by the effector used by the observed person, suggesting that participants focus on the behaviour of the physical device. However, priming effects seem to depend on whether the device is observed from an actionrelated viewing perspective. Overall, the results suggest that the observation of human interaction with a physical device can prime corresponding actions, but only when participants can easily take the perspective of operating the device.
