| summary | A great deal of instruction in science occurs through reading. Background information is often presented via expository text to serve as a foundation for other instructional activities. However, students can be remarkably poor at comprehending the information presented in expository text. The use of the internet as a source of information is also becoming quite common. While the internet offers several affordances over textbooks, most notably the ability to view images and the opportunity to consider multiple sources, these affordances also do not always lead to better comprehension. The present talk will explore several lines of research that have been investigating the individual differences that affect learning from expository text and interact with features of the learning environment, especially in multimedia and multiple source learning contexts. |
