| summary | The vast majority of economists hold that main stream economic theory is a positive science - namely a science that deals with what is?, and accordingly is supposed to account for economic phenomena. In contrast to normative economics, which deals with what ought to be?, positive economics is supposed to be independent of any particular ideology, ethical position or normative judgments. Its task is to provide a system of generalizations that can be used to make correct economic predictions and its performance is to be judged by its precision, scope, and conformity with economic phenomena. We will consider some of the foundations of positive economics and argue that this theory is not ideologically neutral, and that its postulates are highly disputable and very hard to justify. |
