| summary | In recent years, comparative research has consistently suggested that complex social behavior is disrupted when the ventromedial aspect of the frontal cortex (vmPFC) is damaged in disease. The vmPFC is a limbic brain area necessary for the normal regulation of emotions, in particular, social emotions. I review recent studies from my laboratory that have examined whether vmPFC and, in parallel, emotions play a causal role in driving economic decisions embedded in social context. Results of the studies showed that patients with focal bilateral damage to vmPFC produce an abnormal pattern of social decisions, despite normal general intellectual abilities. I hypothesize that vmPFC is critical in mediating the affective evaluation of future outcomes on the basis of both financial and social signals. In contrast to classical decision theory, according to which economic agents are perfectly rational individuals, the present neuropsychological findings suggest that the affective function of vmPFC is needed for the implementation of social decision-making |
