| summary | The mechanism by which nitrogen-fixing heterocysts export fixed nitrogen along the filament to vegetative cells has been studied in many labs recently. Various models have been proposed without an adequate knowledge of the structures present at the cell-cell junctions. Using new methods of specimen preparation we have observed structures that are likely to participate in the transfer of arginine derived from cyanophycin synthesized in the heterocyst. |
