| summary | This presentation identifies key components of anticipation and decision-making skill in sport and other domains and highlights implications for the development of training programmes that facilitate the acquisition of these skills. During the last two decades numerous researchers have examined the factors underlying anticipation and decision making skill. This body of research has distinguished between ‘hardware’ and ‘software’ components. Hardware factors refer to the physical and optometric properties of the visual system, whilst software characteristics relate to perceptual-cognitive factors associated with the encoding, retrieval, and processing of task-relevant information. The consensus is that skilled athletes do not possess superior visual systems compared to their less skilled counterparts per se, but that consistent skill-based differences emerge on more perceptual-cognitive dimensions of performance. It appears that experts are faster and more accurate in recognising and recalling patterns of play and are superior in anticipating the actions of others using information arising from the postural orientation of opponents ahead of a key event such as ball-foot or racket-ball contact. Skilled performers also display more effective visual search strategies and are better at perceiving the minimal essential information underlying skilled perception. Moreover, they have superior knowledge of situational probabilities and their perceptual-cognitive processes are less affected by changes in emotional state. These findings are discussed in light of issues related to the design, implementation and evaluation of training programmes to improve anticipation and decision making skill in sport and other domains such as law enforcement, medicine and the military. |
