summary | The cortical substrates of speech and language functions are well documented, but functions such as timing and rhythm appear to be
understudied. This is surprising as these functions (1) play a critical role in learning, (2) take on compensatory function in acquired and developmental disorders, and (3) can further our understanding of subcortical contributions to speech and language (e.g.,
Kotz, Schwartze, & Schmidt-Kassow, 2009). I will present a concept on how timing and rhythm intercept with speech and will substantiate this concept with recent event-related potential (ERP), and functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) data. |
