summaryWith the rise of neuroeconomics, the economic theory of choice is undergoing a conceptual revolution. However, this research is mostly taking the individual (brain) as the unit of analysis, thus neglecting recent developments in theories of social cognition. The talk will focus on the question how brain research can be related to the economic analysis of institutions, thus building on early contributions of F.A. von Hayek on distributed knowledge in the economy. A central concept is the notion of 'performativity' which has been explored recently by French sociologists in the context of analyzing the evolution of markets.
